We’d been rolling slow for the last hour, headlights off, using the moonlight and sheer stubbornness to navigate. The 4Runner was starting to smell like gun oil, coffee, and ham and beans.

Your wife pointed to a slightly higher patch of ground. “There. Looks defensible.”

We pulled in, killed the engine, and sat listening for a long minute. Just the sound of frogs, a soft splash, maybe a gator sliding into the water, and lazy buzzing from a fly. No mosquitos just yet, but they’d be there with the sun.

Then headlights appeared behind us — weak, bouncing, clearly not military or law enforcement.

“Company,” you muttered, already reaching for the Wilson Combat.

The vehicle stopped thirty yards back. A battered pickup. Three people got out slowly — hands visible, moving like they were scared of their own shadows.

A man in his fifties, a younger woman, and a kid maybe twelve years old.

The man called out, voice shaky. “We’re not infected! We saw fresh tire tracks, thought we heard a vehicle… been driving since the power went out yesterday. We need some food, mister. We’ll pay.”

You snorted. “Cash?”

The younger woman nodded hard. “We can trade. We’ve got tools, some fuel…”

Your wife stepped up beside you, that fire back in her eyes, 1911 still low but ready. “We’re not running a shelter. But we’ve got a little ham and beans left. You sick?”

The man shook his head. “No. Swear it. Just hungry and tired.”

You looked at your wife. She gave a small nod — cautious, but not hostile.

“Stay where you are,” you called. “We’ll bring some over. No sudden moves.”

While your wife covered you, you scooped a couple of portions of the still-warm ham and beans into metal cups and walked them halfway, setting them on the ground before backing up.

The kid practically dove for the food.

The man looked up after the first bite, eyes wet. “Thank you. Most people we’ve seen just… drive past.”

Your wife spoke up, voice calm but firm. “We’re not most people. But we’re also not running a shelter. You got weapons? Any skills?”

The younger woman nodded. “I can shoot. He was a mechanic. Kid’s smart — learns fast.”

You stirred the last of the beans in the pot, thinking. Sharing food was one thing. Sharing space was another.

“Stay the night,” you finally said. “We’ll see how it goes in the morning. But if anyone starts coughing… we handle it quick. No discussion.”

The man swallowed hard and nodded.

As you walked back to the 4Runner, your wife leaned in close, voice low. “You trust them?”

“Not yet,” you answered. “But I’m tired of only talking to Walkers and MREs. And now we have to keep one of us awake at all times just to stay safe.”

She smiled — that small, fierce smile. “Good. Because if they turn out to be trouble, I’m not wasting good ham and beans on them.”

You both laughed quietly under the moonlight while the percolator started its second round of the night.

The Cough was loose.
The Walkers were out there.
And for the first time since it all started, you weren’t completely alone.

The running battle was ugly but short — a loose pack of Walkers caught between two abandoned cars on a narrow county road. The AR-15s chattered from the spring clips while the Wilson Combat CQB stayed on lap as backup. I burned through a full magazine. Good thing I’d tossed a couple cases of 5.56 in the 4Runner.

Your wife never raised her voice. She just reloaded, gave me that small fierce smile, and said, “Ham and beans tonight. I’m tired of MREs.”

We found another pull-off just after midnight — a wide spot next to an old oak hammock with decent sight lines. Far enough from the last mess that we might actually get ten quiet minutes.

I backed the 4Runner in, killed the engine, and we set a quick perimeter like it was muscle memory. Then the real work began.

Coleman stove out. White gas hissing. The big pot came off the go-box. The smell of coffee hit the air while I was still getting the ham and an onion diced up and into the pot. She gave a soft snort. “Explains why you had the go-boxes packed tighter than most people’s bug-out bags.”

“Damn right,” you said, adding a pinch of salt. “Years of watching the news and thinking ‘what if the experts are wrong this time?’ Turns out mild paranoia pays better than blind trust.”

The percolator bubbled. The ham and beans simmered. For a few precious minutes the night felt almost civilized.

Then the first low moan drifted through the trees.

Your wife raised an eyebrow, pistol already coming up.
You kept stirring.

The zombies could wait their damn turn.

You kept one hand on the wheel. Each door pillar had spring clips holding an AR securely in place — nothing loose, nothing rattling. During full zombie armageddon you each had an AR in the clips and a Wilson Combat CQB 1911 with an 8-round mag full of Federal hollow points resting on your lap. Your wife rode shotgun, map on her knees, her own 1911 ready, curly red hair glowing faintly in the dash lights.

“Next left should be clear for a few miles,” she said, voice steady. “Then we can pull off and set a quick bivouac.”

You nodded. “Beans are going to have to wait. No time to soak and cook properly yet. But we can do coffee. Real coffee.”

She gave you that look — half amusement, half Viking-raider assessment. “Of course we can. Priorities.”

Twenty minutes later you found a small gravel pull-off shielded by trees. You killed the lights, backed the 4Runner in so it faced the road, ready to go, and both of you moved like you’d rehearsed it a hundred times. Perimeter check. Quick fighting positions. Then the Coleman stove came out.

While you set security, your wife measured the coffee and water with the calm precision of someone who’d kept a homestead running through worse than this. The percolator started its familiar glug-glug rhythm.

You allowed yourself half a smile as you spooned out a bit of cold beef stew from your MRE. Definitely rejected by Ethiopians ran through your head as you smelled the coffee — and thought, Zombies or no, I’m drinking some good coffee… love me some Stocking Mill Midnight Run.

She handed you a metal cup, freckles catching the faint blue flame of the stove. “Drink fast. We’ve got maybe twenty minutes before something smells that and comes looking.”

You took a sip, letting the heat and bitterness ground you. For one quiet moment the world felt almost normal — just you, her, good coffee, and the faint crackle of the stove.

Then the first Walker appeared at the edge of the tree line. You knew from Zombieland what to expect, but damn.

It was slow, clumsy, still wearing what used to be a gas station uniform. A second one followed a few yards behind it, then a third. Not a horde. Not yet. Just the early Walkers.

You set the cup down carefully on the hood, drew the Wilson Combat CQB from your lap, and put two calm rounds through the first one’s head. It dropped without drama. Your wife did the same with the second. The third never got close.

She never even spilled her coffee. She just raised an eyebrow. “Told you.”

You picked your cup back up, took another sip, and scanned the darkness. “Beans tomorrow night. Proper pot. Tonight we keep moving after this cup. But damn if we’re not doing coffee right.”

She smiled — that small, fierce Molly Ringwald fire mixed with Viking steadiness. “One civilized thing at a time, hero. The zombies can wait their turn.”

You drained the cup, rinsed it with a little water, and packed the percolator away. The 4Runner rumbled back to life.

Your wife looked up from the counter — curly red hair tied back, freckles standing out against her skin, that calm Molly Ringwald fire mixed with Viking-raider steadiness that had kept the homestead running for decades.
“Twenty minutes,” she replied. “I’ll get the go-boxes.”

Gun safe cracked open like a well-drilled crew. Rifles, pistols, shotguns, and every box of ammo that would physically fit went into the 4Runner. The rest got staged by the door in case there was time for a second run — but you weren’t betting the farm on it.

The De Buyer Mineral B Pro went in without debate — because if it came down to close defense, that heavy carbon steel was going to rearrange a zombie skull and still be ready to fry eggs the next morning.

“Fucking bougie apocalypse,” you muttered.
Your wife slid into the passenger seat with the smaller book box on her lap, curly red hair catching the last light. “You’re the one who packed the heirloom beans, hero. Don’t act shocked now.”

“Damn right I did,” you shot back, firing up the engine — darker curly hair, salt-and-pepper beard closely cropped, the same stubborn look you’ve worn since your tanker days. “And it’s fucking corny… I’m tossing boxes of Rancho Gordo beans in my 4Runner right next to stacks of ammo and AR-15s. We’re not rebuilding civilization on cold SpaghettiOs and despair. Somebody’s got to keep standards.”

Beside the bougie beans rode the smaller box — Ranger Handbook for the fighting, Alas, Babylon for the cold dose of realism, Meditations and Lord of the Rings because you weren’t just trying to survive the plague. You were trying to stay the kind of people who could still build something worth living in when the dying finally stopped.

You looked across at her as the gate clicked shut behind you.
“Panhandle swamp. Back roads only. We stay human.”
She gave you that small, fierce smile — Molly Ringwald fire one moment, Viking-raider wife and steady homestead keeper the next. “Then let’s go remind the universe what civilization looks like.”

The 4Runner rumbled south. The percolator rattled gently in the back like a quiet promise.
